Spalletti returns to Serie A as Juventus appoint new head coach

Luciano Spalletti has been named as Juventus’ manager until the end of the current campaign. The 66-year-old takes over from Igor Tudor, who was dismissed following the team’s loss to Lazio on Sunday.

Tudor had stepped in last March to succeed Thiago Motta but departed after enduring eight consecutive matches without victory. His short tenure ended with Juventus languishing in mid-table, prompting the club to act swiftly in search of stability.

From national duty back to club football

Spalletti guided Napoli to the Scudetto in the 2022–23 season before accepting the challenge of managing Italy.

Under his command, the national team secured a place at Euro 2024, though their campaign ended in the round of 16 against Switzerland.

Despite that achievement, he was removed from the position in June following a World Cup qualifying defeat to Norway, which left the Azzurri in danger of missing another major tournament.

His exit from the Italy job opened the door for a swift return to Serie A management.

Experienced figure with domestic and international pedigree

Throughout his career, Spalletti has led several prominent sides in Italy, including Inter Milan, Roma, and Udinese. Beyond his homeland, he also achieved success in Russia, winning two league titles with Zenit St Petersburg.

Known for his tactical precision and attacking style, Spalletti now faces the challenge of reviving Juventus’ form and guiding them back into title contention.

His appointment signals the club’s intent to restore stability and regain momentum after a turbulent few months.

Juventus still chasing consistency

Before Spalletti’s arrival, Massimo Brambilla oversaw the side’s 3-1 win over Udinese as caretaker boss. That result left the Turin club in seventh position in Serie A, six points adrift of leaders Napoli after nine fixtures.

In Europe, their situation is less encouraging—they sit 25th in the Champions League league phase, having collected only two points from three outings.

Spalletti’s immediate task will be to improve results both domestically and on the continental stage.
