Sables turn attention to Canada after battling USA in Nations Cup

The Zimbabwe Sables produced another determined display in the World Rugby Nations Cup but ultimately fell 31-15 to hosts USA in Charlotte. Despite the defeat, there were plenty of positives for Piet Benade’s side as they continue to test themselves against quality international opposition ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Zimbabwe recovered well after conceding two early tries, responding through Edward Sigauke and Aiden Burnett to take a narrow 15-12 lead into half-time. However, injuries and the USA’s strong set-piece play shifted the momentum after the break, allowing the hosts to pull away and secure victory.
One of the highlights of the afternoon came before kick-off, with the Sables unveiling a striking black and green retro jersey. The throwback kit was warmly received by supporters, paying tribute to Zimbabwean rugby’s rich history while giving fans another reason to celebrate the team’s growing identity on the international stage.
Although the result did not go Zimbabwe’s way, the Nations Cup continues to provide invaluable experience against Tier Two opposition. Every minute on the field is helping the Sables adapt to the pace, physicality and precision required at this level, with several players continuing to impress against world-class competition.
The focus now shifts to their final fixture against Canada, where the Sables will be eager to finish the tournament on a high. It presents another excellent opportunity to put into practice the lessons learned against Tonga and the USA, while continuing to build combinations and confidence.
For Zimbabwe, the journey is about more than results. The Nations Cup is another important step in the team’s preparation for the Rugby World Cup, and with Canada up next, the Sables have one final chance to showcase the progress they have made on the international stage.
