Sables gain valuable lessons ahead of Nations Series Challenge

The Zimbabwe Sables received an important reality check in their preparations for the upcoming Nations Series after going down 40-0 to South Africa ‘A’ at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Gqeberha on Saturday. While the scoreline was convincing, the fixture was always about more than the result for a Zimbabwe side continuing its journey towards the 2027 Rugby World Cup.
Facing a South Africa ‘A’ side packed with emerging stars and experienced professionals, the Sables were tested by one of the strongest rugby systems in the world. The match exposed areas where improvement is needed, particularly in handling, defensive consistency and converting opportunities into points. However, it also provided invaluable experience that cannot be replicated on the training field.
There were encouraging individual performances despite the defeat. Tino Mavesere once again showed why he is one of Zimbabwe’s most influential players, carrying strongly and working tirelessly throughout the contest. Tapiwa Mafura also impressed with his commitment and willingness to counter-attack under pressure.
Importantly, the Sables now have a clearer picture of the standards required as they prepare to travel to the United States for the World Rugby Nations Series. The tournament will see Zimbabwe face Tonga, the USA and Canada, all of whom will provide stern opposition but also opportunities for the African champions to continue their growth.
Rather than dwelling on the defeat, the Sables can view the South Africa ‘A’ match as an important benchmark. Few teams get the opportunity to test themselves against opposition of this calibre, and the lessons learned in Gqeberha could prove invaluable in the weeks ahead.
With the Nations Series fast approaching, Zimbabwe’s focus now shifts to turning those lessons into performances as they continue their exciting rise on the international stage.
