Sables Dominate Zambia to Retain Zambezi Challenge Cup

The Zimbabwe Sables produced a commanding performance on Sunday at Harare Sports Club, crushing Zambia 75-10 to retain the Zambezi Challenge Cup. It was a clinical and dominant display from the hosts, extending their unbeaten test run to eight consecutive matches.

From the opening whistle, the Sables imposed themselves on the game, playing with intensity and structure that the Zambian Eagles struggled to match. Despite their best efforts, the visitors could not contain the attacking firepower of Zimbabwe. The first half ended 21-10, with Zambia still hanging on, but the second half saw the floodgates open as Zimbabwe ran riot.

The Sables’ second-half performance was a ruthless demonstration of their fitness, depth, and game management. Their relentless pace and tactical execution saw them rack up over 50 unanswered points after the break, leaving Zambia with no response.

This emphatic result is a clear indication of the strides Zimbabwe is making in preparation for a bigger challenge — overcoming continental rivals Namibia and aiming for glory at the Rugby Africa Cup in June and July.

Head coach Piet Benade gave several debutants the opportunity to impress, and they did not disappoint. Nyasha Shiripinda, Tapiwa Malenga, Vuyiswa Mpofu, Vuyani Dhlomo, Tyrone Gombe, and Ryan Musumhi — who came on early in the match due to an injury to Tadius Dzandiwandira — all showed promise and composure at test level.

The return of Shingi Katsvere was another highlight. Having spent time playing professionally in Spain and France, his reintroduction into the squad signals a renewed personal goal of representing Zimbabwe at the 2027 Rugby World Cup.

With such a dominant start to the year, the Sables have set the tone for what promises to be an exciting and ambitious 2025 season.
