Rodrygo’s current struggles in front of goal have reached a level no Real Madrid attacker would ever wish to experience.
The Brazilian’s brief appearance late in the 1–1 draw with Girona did not change the scoreline and instead extended his barren run.
That outing pushed him to 30 successive club matches without scoring, equalling the longest goalless streak ever registered by a Madrid forward. His total of 1,339 minutes without converting surpasses the previous tally held by Mariano Díaz in the same number of fixtures.
While Díaz logged fewer minutes due to limited involvement, Rodrygo has featured regularly and still awaits a breakthrough.
According to Spanish statistician MisterChip and The Athletic, only Rafa Marañón endured a longer wait in terms of minutes. Marañón’s own rough spell stretched across 29 games between 1972 and 1974, accumulating 1,416 minutes before he finally struck again.
Rodrygo sits just 78 minutes away from owning the record outright.
Lessons from the club’s past
Marañón played four seasons with Madrid before moving on and becoming Espanyol’s all-time leading scorer. His journey shows that even the bleakest spells can be followed by a revival elsewhere.
Rodrygo has already exceeded Marañón’s game total but still trails the former striker’s minute mark by a slim margin. The 22-month gap between Marañón’s early goals also demonstrates that severe droughts can occur even in long careers.
Though Rodrygo’s present form is concerning, his previous scoring peaks hint at the possibility of turning the situation around. Whether that resurgence happens in Madrid or beyond remains uncertain.
The growing pressure around his future has not yet translated into confirmed intentions from the club. For now, the Brazilian continues searching for a long-awaited strike to reset his season.
A difficult season for the Brazilian
Rodrygo last netted in March, delivering the opener in the second leg of a tense Champions League round-of-16 tie against Atlético Madrid.
Since then, he has added only one league goal in 2025—and that came in January.
Speculation surfaced over the summer regarding a possible departure, particularly after Xabi Alonso used him sparingly at the Club World Cup. Even so, the winger insisted he wished to stay and compete for a role in the starting side.
Alonso has recently deployed him more often on the left, a shift that displaces Vinícius Júnior, yet the change has not produced the hoped-for breakthrough. His output in La Liga reflects the decline: seventy-eight players have attempted more shots, and 137 have registered a higher xG figure than his current 0.7.
Despite the limited end product, talk of a winter exit remains quiet and mostly unsubstantiated. Rodrygo himself stated last month that he intends to remain as long as the club values him.
Numbers that define the drought
Across this stretch of 30 appearances, Rodrygo has played 1,339 minutes without scoring.
During that time he has taken 37 attempts, hitting the target on 14 occasions. He has supplied three assists but has otherwise offered little in terms of decisive attacking moments.
If the drought extends much further, Madrid’s patience may be tested.
