“If you can’t win, don’t lose,” says Chelsea showstopper Robert Sanchez, after the club failed to take all three points back home from the Vitality Stadium on Saturday.
The Blues were in Premier League action against AFC Bournemouth in week 15. They were desperate to get back to winning ways, having failed to win a game of football since beating Barcelona a little over three weeks ago in the UEFA Champions League.
They failed to penetrate the Cherries’ home defense, however, and had Sanchez to thank for saving their blushes a couple of times in the game. In the end, it ended goalless, and Enzo Maresca is now left to ponder what must be done to improve his team’s lot.
However, the Spaniard, whose saves contributed immensely to the fact that Chelsea left with their dignity intact, expressed his satisfaction at the game’s outcome. He believes that, though they did not win the fixture, taking home a point is also a good result that they can build upon.
“Of course, there’s a sense of disappointment we couldn’t get the win,” said the former Brighton and Hove Albion goalkeeper. “Coming from a loss in the last game, we wanted to redeem ourselves and get three points and a clean sheet.
“We created chances; I think we played well. We missed that goal, but we kept a clean sheet, and we didn’t lose the game.
“If you cannot win, try not to lose, and that’s what we did. We will take the point, and we will go to the next game and try to get three.”
Sanchez then spoke on the overall game and how Chelsea were able to threaten their hosts, causing them to come close on a number of occasions.
“I didn’t have much to do in the first 20 minutes of the second half, but you know, especially with Semenyo, he is going to get a shot in from anywhere at any moment, so I had to be ready, and I was,” Sanchez said.
“Bournemouth are a great team; they came with a lot of intensity in the first 20 minutes, half an hour. We had to deal with that and make sure we managed on and off the ball well and then see how the game went. We did that well. That’s how we were able to manage the game.”
Sanchez then added: “We know what our goal is, we know we have quality, and we want to do as best as we can. So we want to make sure we keep going and try and get as many wins as we can, so we have to keep grinding and get some wins.”
