Zimbabwe have named their 15-man squad for the upcoming four-day Test against England, set to take place at Trent Bridge in Nottingham from 22 to 25 May. The Chevrons welcome back star all-rounder Sikandar Raza, who missed the recent Test series against Ireland and Bangladesh due to T20 franchise commitments.
Raza replaces Johnathan Campbell, while there’s also a recall for wicketkeeper Clive Madande following injury. He slots in as backup to Tafadzwa Tsiga, with Nyasha Mayavo making way.
With seam-friendly English conditions in mind, head coach Justin Sammons has opted to bolster the pace attack. Newman Nyamhuri comes in for legspinner Vincent Masekesa, despite Masekesa’s impressive five-wicket haul on debut in Chattogram last month. Sammons explained the reasoning behind the changes, stating: “I expect us to play to a standard that can compete with one of the best teams in the world. I want the guys to believe they belong and to embrace the moment.”
This match marks Zimbabwe’s first Test in England since 2003, and their first international fixture in the country since 2004. It will be a significant occasion for a side eager to make a mark on the world stage once again.
After the England Test, Zimbabwe will head to Bulawayo for a four-day fixture against South Africa from 3 to 6 June. That match will serve as preparation for South Africa ahead of their World Test Championship final against Australia at Lord’s.
Zimbabwe squad: Craig Ervine (capt), Brian Bennett, Ben Curran, Trevor Gwandu, Clive Madande (wk), Wessly Madhevere, Wellington Masakadza, Blessing Muzarabani, Richard Ngarava, Newman Nyamhuri, Victor Nyauchi, Sikandar Raza, Tafadzwa Tsiga (wk), Nick Welch, Sean Williams.
