Police probe fatal incident at NSS during Warriors-DRC game

The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) has launched an investigation into a fatal incident at the National Sports Stadium during today’s AFCON qualifier match between Zimbabwe and the Democratic Republic of Congo, which led to the death of one person.

According to a statement issued by the police, one person died during a stampede at gate number two at around 6:30pm, shortly after the beginning of the match.

The incident involved a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian, with the circumstances surrounding the death now the subject of an investigation.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that swift and comprehensive investigations are currently under way after a fatal incident involving a police public order vehicle and a pedestrian at the National Sports Stadium,” Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi said in a statement.

The police said the incident occurred during a stampede at the stadium as spectators entered the venue for the Warriors-Leopards clash.

The circumstances leading to the stampede, including what happened between the pedestrian and the police vehicle, have not yet been fully established.

The Commissioner-General of Police expressed his condolences to the family of the victim and assured the public that investigations would be conducted objectively to establish exactly what transpired.

“A detailed statement will be issued in due course,” the police said.

The incident has cast a sombre shadow over the match, which was being played before a large crowd at the National Sports Stadium.

The police statement was signed by P. Nyathi, Commissioner and Chief Staff Officer (Press and Public Relations) to the Commissioner-General of Police.

Authorities are expected to provide further details as investigations into the fatal incident continue.
