England has brought in Manchester City defender Nico O’Reilly for the upcoming fixtures after Reece James was forced to withdraw through injury.
The Chelsea full-back sustained the problem during his side’s Premier League victory over Liverpool on Saturday. He later shared an image of a cut on his shin via Instagram. Medical checks confirmed he would not be available for the national team.
Young City player steps up
O’Reilly has been promoted from the Under-21 setup for the matches against Wales on 9 October and Latvia on 14 October.
Although listed as a defender, the 20-year-old typically operates on the left side of the back line. His inclusion leaves Tottenham’s Djed Spence as the sole specialist right-back in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.
Having joined City’s academy at the age of eight, O’Reilly broke into the senior team last campaign, featuring 21 times and scoring on five occasions. He was also part of Pep Guardiola’s travelling party for the Club World Cup and has already made nine appearances this season.
‘Buzzing’ reaction to surprise selection
Speaking to BBC Radio 5 Live, O’Reilly admitted he was stunned but thrilled when he received the news.
He began his career further up the pitch but has adapted to a defensive role under Guardiola’s guidance. He described the early transition as “pretty difficult” because he had never previously featured there, though daily work on the training ground has helped him settle.
The young defender said learning how to handle one-on-one situations was new to him but that he is improving every day and enjoying the challenge.
Asked about his rapid rise, he said he tries to remain grounded and not get distracted by the attention.
Stones’ surprise at St George’s Park
O’Reilly revealed that City colleague John Stones was taken aback to see him with the senior squad.
“He was a bit shocked,” O’Reilly explained, noting that his inclusion came unexpectedly. He added that it was reassuring to have a familiar teammate alongside him during the international meet-up.
Recognition for club form
The call-up highlights O’Reilly’s impact at the club level this season.
Converted from a creative midfield role into defense, he has started seven of City’s matches. His physical presence and ability to adapt to different positions suit Tuchel’s preference for powerful, dynamic players.
The 20-year-old has represented England at every age group from under-15s through under-20s and received his first under-21 invitation in September before injury ruled him out.
Though he still sees himself as a midfielder, his selection as James’s replacement indicates he will likely feature in the back line.
England’s options on the right remain limited, with Spence the only recognized player in that position. Interestingly, he was initially drafted as a left-back in the previous international window.
