Ngezi Platinum Stars stun Scottland

Former champions Ngezi Platinum Stars gave star-studded Scottland a massive reality check following an impressive 1-0 victory over the new boys, in an entertaining Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match played at Rufaro Stadium yesterday.

Takesure Chiragwi’s men were simply brilliant and dominated their opponents from start to finish, in a contest watched by a decent crowd at the iconic venue in Mbare.

Kudzai Chigwida’s 83rd minute, awarded by referee Brighton Chimene after a foul on Tinashe Mavhudzi by Fredrick Botchway, was all that Madamburo needed to hand Scotland their first defeat in the Premiership.

It was also the first time Mabviravira conceded a goal in their debut season in the country’s top-flight.

The win for Ngezi was wildly celebrated by neutrals at Rufaro, some of whom could be seen waving Dynamos and CAPS United flags.

Scottland coach Tonderai Ndiraya believed his charges deserved something from the game, despite “not showing the same energy they showed when they beat CAPS United last week.”

“We had a very good game, which was balanced, but we were not ourselves today. We started very slowly. We could not create chances, and if you don’t create chances, you don’t win the game. I thought a draw would have been a good result,” said Ndiraya.

Chiragwi was naturally happy with how his team fared against the most expensively-assembled team in the Premiership.

“To be honest, this is a strong side and I would want to say that it’s a studded team. It’s a very good team. On a good day they could even beaten us. We could even go out and draw,” said Chiragwi.

“To be honest they are very competent. They’ve got a good quality but today it was our day. We used our chance that we got to make sure we can make the difference.

“But it’s a very good team that we also need to respect. They had their chances to make sure they can bounce back or even punishing us,” he added.
