Newcastle United are edging closer to finalising the signing of AC Milan defender Malick Thiaw. The Germany international is expected to fly to Tyneside on Sunday evening to put the finishing touches on his move to St James’ Park.
The Magpies have faced setbacks in the market this summer, failing to land several targets, including Benjamin Sesko, Hugo Ekitike, Joao Pedro, and James Trafford. However, Thiaw’s eagerness to make the switch has provided a much-needed boost for the club’s recruitment plans. The 24-year-old will undergo a medical before completing a deal understood to be worth up to £34.62 million (€40 million) with add-ons.
Howe’s defensive overhaul
Strengthening the heart of defence has been a major priority for manager Eddie Howe during the current transfer window. His aim is to inject youth and competition into a backline that already has significant experience. By bringing in Thiaw, Newcastle would be adding a player who could challenge for a regular starting role while also lowering the squad’s average age.
Although Howe avoided directly naming the Milan defender over the weekend, he has previously spoken favourably about him, calling him “a very good player.”
Timing crucial ahead of Villa clash
With Newcastle set to open their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on Saturday, Howe has expressed hope of wrapping up signings before the first matchday. Speaking after Friday’s pre-season match, the head coach revealed that he had been optimistic about new arrivals for several weeks.
He stressed that everyone at the club has been working hard to push deals over the line but acknowledged the complexities involved in the transfer market. In his view, signings must represent the right quality and value before any agreement is finalised.
