Newcastle agree deal for Aston Villa’s Jacob Ramsey

Newcastle United are set to sign midfielder Jacob Ramsey from Aston Villa in a transfer valued at around £40m. BBC Sport revealed earlier this week that both clubs were engaged in advanced negotiations, and a deal in principle has now been reached. Only final arrangements remain before the move is officially completed.

Once confirmed, the 24-year-old will undertake the standard procedures, including a medical examination, ahead of his switch to St James’ Park. Coincidentally, Villa will face Newcastle in their first Premier League fixture of the season at 12:30 BST on Saturday.

Since breaking into Villa’s senior side in 2019, Ramsey has made 167 appearances and scored 17 goals. The former England Under-21 international was a consistent presence for Unai Emery’s team last season.

Recent arrivals at St. James’ park

Newcastle have already added Anthony Elanga from Nottingham Forest and Malick Thiaw from AC Milan on permanent contracts this summer. Earlier in August, England goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale joined from Southampton on a season-long loan.

This week’s business marks a significant change in pace, with the Magpies securing as many senior signings in the past seven days as they did in the opening months of the transfer window. The ongoing pursuit of Alexander Isak continues, but these recent acquisitions have provided manager Eddie Howe with a timely lift after a challenging summer.

How Ramsey fits in

Ramsey has been on Newcastle’s radar for some time. The midfielder brings qualities in age, energy, and ambition that the club believes can flourish further on Tyneside.

His arrival will bolster Newcastle’s midfield options following the departure of Sean Longstaff. With experience in both the Premier League and the Champions League, Ramsey is expected to adapt quickly to his new surroundings.
