The drama was so much that at some point, a son was capable of plotting his father’s downfall.
Panashe Mutasa, son of MWOS coach Lloyd Mutasa, who plays for TelOne, was introduced in the 80th minute with the Punters trailing the Wi-Fi Boys 2-1 at Ngoni Stadium.
Hebert ’Jompano’ Marowa’s charges raced to a 2-0 lead just after the restart when Milton Chimedza’s brilliant solo effort gave Francis Tizayi in goal for MWOS no chance whatsoever.
Chimedza doubled TelOne’s advantage after Eriya Mafirenyika had thrust TelOne ahead with a headed first-half goal.
Innocent Zambezi pulled one back for MWOS in the 60th minute.
It was game on, and the drama was far from over.
The league’s leading goal scorer, Washington Navaya, was brought down in the box by MWOS’ Tinotenda Mutyambizi, and though contact appeared to have been made outside the 18-yard area, the referee awarded a penalty.
MWOS players protested, but the referee stood his ground.
Navaya stepped up, but his tame effort from 12 yards was easily saved by Tizayi.
Billy Veremu drew MWOS level with two minutes of regulation time left when he rose high to restore parity for the Punters.
The referee added six minutes of time added on, but only four were played, and the two sides eventually settled for a share of the spoils.
MWOS coach Lloyd Mutasa admitted his charges didn’t start the game well.
“I think we started very slowly, and TelOne were coming to us. They managed to get a goal and then got another. Once a team is two goals up, it’s never easy. I would like to appreciate the work ethics of these young lads for having that kind of resilience to force a comeback,” said Mutasa.
Maruwa felt his troops deserved to win the game.
“We did very well by scoring first and getting another one just into the second half, but a moment of madness from the boys, who failed to control their emotions, cost us the game,” said Marowa.
