Musona on the brink of history

Warriors star Knowledge Musona is set to become the first Zimbabwean player to take part in four different Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON finals) should he feature against Egypt tonight.

Zimbabwe begin their campaign against seven-time champions Egypt at the Stadia de Agadir, as the Warriors make their 6th appearance at the continental extravaganza.

If he is to play a part, Musona would have made his fourth appearance at the biannual showpiece.

The former Kaizer Chiefs star first featured for Zimbabwe at the AFCON finals in 2017 in Gabon, before captaining his country in the 2019 edition in Egypt.

Musona also led the the Warriors in the 2021 edition in Cameroon, where he scored in Zimbabwe’s 2-1 victory over Guinea.

If he does score at AFCON 2025, the soft-spoken star will become the first Zimbabwean to score at three different editions of the tournament, having done so against Tunisia in 2017 and Guinea in 2021.

Musona believes Zimbabwe getting a positive result against Egypt is an achievable task.

“We have been watching Egypt for some time now and it’s not our first time playing against them,” he told the media after the Warriors’ last training session yesterday.

“We are not here (at the tournament) to add numbers and we want to prove to the world that we are good footballers,” he added.
