Mushonga’s NRSL tenure off to a rocky start
Sweeney Mushonga’s leadership of the Northern Region Soccer League (NRSL) has been marred by controversy, with the delayed kickoff sparking debate.
The Northern Region Soccer League was initially set to kickoff on the 28th of last month but the NRSL informed the public that the unavailability of match officials delayed the start.
Zifa quashed these claims by the Sweeney Mushonga led NRSL board.
Infact there was the issue of Chingwere FC who won promotion to the Northern Region Soccer League after winning the ZIFA Mashonaland West Division 2B.
Drama ensued when Chingwere FC were initially excluded to the NRSL due to alleged late payment of US$6,000 affiliation fees.
Despite making a part payment of US$3,000 and requesting an extension, NRSL declined their membership and instead incorporated Marere FC who finished 11 in the same league Chingwere FC played.
Aggrieved, Chingwere lodged their case to the ZIFA Appeals Committee.
The ZIFA Appeals Committee ruled in favor of Chingwere FC, ordering NRSL to re-admit the club.
Fast forwarding to the latest news, Fanzone understands that the NRSL is reportedly considering a 22-team format to accommodate Marere FC, who finished 11th in the same division.
This move will raise concerns about unfair treatment and double standards in Zimbabwean football administration.
Mushonga, who took over as NRSL chairman in December 2025, is facing scrutiny over the decision-making process and communication with ZIFA.
Kick off for the newly rebranded MCM Estates Northern Region Soccer League is reportedly set for the end of this month.
The saga highlights concerns about transparency and fairness in Zimbabwean football.
As the situation unfolds, stakeholders will be watching closely to see how Mushonga’s leadership will navigate this crisis.
