MUKUMBIRA’S MISSION: Can Simba Bhora’s talisman trigger title charge?‎

‎In the shadow of majestic hills that cradle the small mining town of Shamva, Carlos Mukumbira is quietly plotting his resurgence.

‎His stay at Wadzanai Stadium hasn’t been easy, just like his journey to the top.

‎The 22-year-old forward started his footballing journey at Rusununguko High School under the tutelage of Joseph Madzinga, winning the Copa Coca Cola tournament in 2017 and the Proton & Surrey NASH Under-20 Boys Soccer Tournament in 2019.

‎Madzinga, who was also coaching Pro Melfort FC, brought Mukumbira into the Eastern Region Soccer League fold that same year.

‎Pro Melfort had some notable results, including a win over Mutare City Rovers FC that dented their title aspirations.

‎In all those memorable wins and epic scalps, young Mukumbira dazzled opponents and potential suitors were closely monitoring him.

‎However, the COVID-19 pandemic wrecked havoc, and footballing activities were temporarily suspended in January 2021.

‎The breakout for young Carlos then came after the pandemic when Bikita Minerals FC, after winning the Eastern Region Soccer League in 2023, secured Mukumbira’s signature.

‎Fresh-faced and hungry for success, Mukumbira had an impressive outing in his maiden Castle Lager Premier Soccer League campaign under Saul Chamimuka.

‎He netted 6 goals and registered 7 assists, including scoring a winner against Harare giants CAPS United at Rufaro, a feat Mukumbira is forever grateful to Chamimuka for.

“He introduced me to the Premier League and was patient with my development,” Mukumbira told Fanzone.

“He is the one who motivated and pushed me to put out my best.”

‎Transitioning from Division One to the Premier League wasn’t easy, Mukumbira revealed.

“Yes, there’s a big difference playing in the lower divisions and top flight. In the Premier League, there’s so much pressure from home and away fans, especially playing at a full stadium like Babourfields Stadium where the atmosphere is something else.”

‎After a standout season at Bikita Minerals, Mukumbira joined Simba Bhora FC, who had just won the 2024 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title under Tonderai Ndiraya.

‎However, Ndiraya left for Scottland FC, and Joel Luphahla took over, bringing a different style.

‎Mukumbira struggled with injuries and limited game time under Luphahla, but he’s ready for a fresh start under new coach Mandla “Lulu” Mpofu.

‎”I am ready for a fresh start, yes I know it has been a long journey with some disappointments, but I thank God for everything,” Mukumbira said.

“I salute Coach Madzinga for believing in me, and Coach Chamimuka for giving me a chance. I also thank Coach Luphahla for trusting me again.”

‎Turning 23 on February 6 next month, Mukumbira’s focus is now on leading Simba Bhora back to Premier League glory.

“2026 at Simba Bhora, we’re aiming to win the Premier League again. I’ll work hard to make it happen,” said Mukumbira.

‎With double-digit goals his target, Mukumbira’s mission is clear.

‎”My goal this season is to end up with double-digit goals. I hope it works out,” said Mukumbira.
