Mucheraohwa’s heartfelt plea — “Let’s save Dynamos now; relegation and defunct status are huge possibilities.”

Of all that can happen in Zimbabwean football, Dynamos playing Division One football is unimaginable. The Harare giants are the most successful club in Zimbabwean football, having won 22 league titles. They have provided the most Soccer Star of the Year award winners in the history of the prestigious gong. Similarly, DeMbare were 90 minutes away from being crowned African champions in 1998.

Then under the guidance of legendary coach Sunday ‘Mhofu’ Chidzambwa, DeMbare went all the way to the CAF Champions League final and lost to Ivorian giants Asec Mimosas. After that historic journey, Dynamos won four consecutive league titles between 2011 and 2014 in a dominant period under Kalisto Pasuwa. But for all the iconic history associated with the club, Dynamos, now more than ever, look down and out.

18 games into the 2025 Premiership season, Dynamos have recorded only two wins and are currently languishing in 17th place on the log standings. Even an overhaul of the technical team, which saw Saul Chaminuka replacing Lloyd ‘Mablanyo’ Chigowe, has not changed the fortunes of DeMbare. The Glamour Boys need a miracle to survive the chop, but their former captain, Memory Mucherahowa, is not confident they will have one. He described Dynamos as a sinking ship whose problems have a name – board chairman Bernard Marriot Lusengo.

“Dynamos is a walking grave or, put simply, a sinking ship. The problem is that people are just looking at history without seeing reality. As things are currently, I see the club getting relegated if things don’t change,” said Mucherahowa, speaking to Fanzone from his base in Slough, United Kingdom.

“The biggest problem at Dynamos is Marriot; he is the reason why the club is in such a crisis. The Dynamos’ ownership dispute is to blame for the club’s current state.

“Let’s do simple mathematics. Dynamos was formed in 1963; Marriott is 76 years old. In 1963, he was 14. Are you telling me that Marriott founded Dynamos at just 14 years of age?

“As former players, we tried to save that institution called Dynamos. From the time when David George was alive, up to the time he passed away, we were trying to save Dynamos from Marriot.

‘When the issue went to court, the ruling cast a blind eye on the fact that Marriot didn’t form the club. He was simply too young to have done so,” added Mucherahowa.

The former midfielder pleaded with current and former players to act now or risk the possibility of Dynamos becoming non-operational.

“My plea to the current crop of players is simple: save Dynamos now, please. They should know that at this point, what is important is not going down in history as the crop of players which got the club relegated.

“I know they are suffering and not getting any meaningful results. I also know they have got families to feed, but somehow they need to try and avoid a situation whereby the team gets relegated, because realistically, it is a possibility.

Mucherahowa also pleaded with DeMbare fans to unite and save the club.

“I’m in total agreement with the fans who are boycotting games, and I understand them, but for now, let’s focus on saving the club from relegation and then deal with Marriot later,” he said.

“Supporters can go to the stadium and demand their club back from Marriott while also encouraging these youngsters (the players) to fight for the badge and avoid relegation,” added Mucherohowa.
