Modric undergoes surgery but Croatia expect captain for World Cup

Croatia manager Zlatko Dalic remains optimistic that Luka Modric will recover in time to captain his country at this summer’s World Cup after the veteran midfielder underwent surgery for a serious facial fracture.
The 40-year-old AC Milan player suffered the injury during Sunday’s goalless draw against Juventus after an aerial collision with Manuel Locatelli. Following medical assessment, Milan confirmed Modric had sustained a complicated multi-fragment break of the left cheekbone.
The Italian club announced that the operation was entirely successful, though no timetable was provided for his return. Milan also expressed hope that the midfielder would make a swift recovery before the upcoming global tournament.
Dalic confident over captain’s return
Despite the setback, Dalic revealed he has already spoken with Modric and offered his support as the player begins rehabilitation.
The Croatia boss said he believes his captain will do everything possible to regain fitness ahead of the competition and stressed that the national team will stand behind him throughout the process.
Dalic also expressed confidence that the recovery will progress as expected, allowing Modric to once again lead Croatia on the international stage this summer.
Race against time before tournament begins
The World Cup gets underway on 11 June, with Croatia scheduled to begin their campaign against England on 17 June.
With the tournament approaching quickly, Modric is now in a race to regain full fitness after surgery, though his national team coach remains hopeful the experienced midfielder will be available.
Milan lose key midfielder for season run-in
While Croatia focus on his summer availability, AC Milan are expected to be without Modric for the remainder of their Serie A campaign.
The midfielder is likely to miss Milan’s final four league fixtures as the club battle to secure Champions League qualification. Milan currently sit third on 67 points, ahead of Juventus in fourth on 64, while Como and Roma both have 61 points.
