Discussions are underway between Manchester United and Harry Maguire regarding a possible contract extension that would prolong his stay at Old Trafford beyond the current season. The center back’s existing agreement, signed after his 2019 transfer from Leicester City for £80 million ($106.4 million), is set to expire at the end of this campaign. That initial six-year deal included an additional 12-month option, which has been activated to prevent it from ending earlier.
Maguire became the costliest defender in football history when he joined United, a record that still stands. At the time, his arrival represented the club’s second-highest transfer outlay.
Rebuilding importance at Old Trafford
After a strong start under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the defender’s role declined due to injuries and a dip in form. In 2024, the captain’s armband passed to Bruno Fernandes, but Maguire has since worked his way back into prominence within the squad.
While domestic football pauses for international fixtures—and with Maguire not selected for the current England camp—Fabrizio Romano has reported that a recent in-person meeting took place between the player and the club. Further negotiations are expected, with Manchester United reportedly satisfied with his leadership and performances.
Transfer approaches rebuffed
In August, it emerged that five clubs—three from the Premier League and two from Serie A—had expressed interest in a possible transfer earlier in the summer. Those inquiries were dismissed, as United made it clear they wished to retain the defender. Maguire’s personal ambition is to follow in the footsteps of center backs such as Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister, figures who defined United’s defense in the 1990s.
The player himself later hinted at the situation, indicating that his departure had effectively been ruled out during the recent window.
Summer decision and future plans
Maguire rejected a move to West Ham United in 2024 after both clubs agreed on a fee. Around that time, reports surfaced suggesting that positive conversations had already begun over fresh terms to keep him in Manchester.
Speaking on his future, he noted that discussions with the club would continue over the coming months to decide on the next steps. He suggested that while he has his own goals in mind, remaining at a club of United’s stature is something he values highly.
