RB Leipzig have initiated contact with Liverpool regarding midfielder Harvey Elliott, as they consider potential replacements for Xavi Simons. As reported by The Athletic, conversations between the two sides have started, though they remain in the early stages.
Elliott, who faced limited minutes under Arne Slot during the 2024–25 season, is open to the idea of a fresh start. While he is believed to be considering a move away from Merseyside, Liverpool are not expected to accept a sale unless their conditions are met. The Reds are holding out for a minimum of £40 million if a buy-back clause is included in the deal, or a higher valuation exceeding £50 million without one.
Leipzig view the 22-year-old Englishman as a suitable successor to Simons, who is anticipated to depart before the current transfer window shuts. The Bundesliga side is making preparations in the event of his exit.
Simons’ imminent departure could benefit Chelsea
It has become increasingly clear that Simons is looking to leave Leipzig this summer. The Dutch midfielder has attracted significant attention, most notably from Chelsea, who are working on finalising a deal with the German club.
Should Leipzig approve Simons’ exit, Elliott is seen as the priority candidate to fill the void. Chelsea, in turn, may benefit from Leipzig’s willingness to move quickly on Simons’ future, as the English side aims to bolster their midfield options.
Clubs finalize pre-season plans
Liverpool have concluded their summer fixtures and are preparing for their Community Shield clash against Crystal Palace on Sunday. Meanwhile, Chelsea are scheduled to play two more exhibition matches ahead of their season opener, which will also be against Palace.
Leipzig, on the other hand, are working towards solidifying their roster ahead of their German Cup match against Sandhausen on August 16. The next few weeks will likely be decisive in determining both Simons’ and Elliott’s next steps.
