Leeds moves closer to safety with dominant victory over Burnley

Leeds United took a significant stride towards avoiding relegation after a convincing home win against Burnley at Elland Road lifted them nine points above the drop zone. The hosts climbed to 14th place, with their points total reaching 43 — a figure that has historically ensured survival in a 38-game campaign.

The breakthrough arrived in the eighth minute when Anton Stach, declared fit despite a recent injury, struck from distance after being set up by Jaka Bijol. It marked his fourth goal from outside the box this season, more than any other player in the division.

Leeds dictated play throughout the opening period, maintaining control of possession and creating further opportunities. Stach nearly added another before a crucial intervention from Quilindschy Hartman prevented a second goal. Burnley’s best first-half moment came late on, but Jaidon Anthony’s header was blocked by teammate Zian Flemming.

Second-half surge seals result

After the interval, Leeds quickly extended their advantage. Noah Okafor finished off a flowing move, converting a cross from Jayden Bogle after build-up play involving Dominic Calvert-Lewin. The goal continued Okafor’s strong form, as it was his sixth in seven matches.

Moments later, Calvert-Lewin capitalised on an error by Martin Dubravka to add a third, bringing his league tally for the season to 12 and effectively ending the contest. Leeds showed no intention of easing off, maintaining pressure and control.

Burnley managed a late response when Loum Tchaouna found the net, but it proved only a consolation. The defeat marked their 23rd loss of the season and extended their winless run to nine league games, leaving them 19th.

leeds on verge of survival after difficult campaign

At full time, there was visible relief among the home side. Players, including Calvert-Lewin and Okafor, celebrated together, while head coach Daniel Farke acknowledged supporters with enthusiastic gestures.

Although Leeds have recorded notable victories this season, including wins over Chelsea and Manchester United, this result carried particular importance. The three points have effectively secured their place in the top flight, a scenario that seemed unlikely earlier in the campaign during a poor run in the autumn.

While confirmation is still pending mathematically, attention can begin to shift towards planning for next season. After a challenging year, this outcome allows the club to approach the future with renewed confidence.

Burnley face questions after relegation

For Burnley, the past week has been especially difficult. Relegation to the Championship was confirmed recently, followed by the departure of head coach Scott Parker by mutual agreement.

This defeat further highlighted the growing gap between the two sides since their promotion. Last season, both teams accumulated 100 points in the Championship, with Leeds finishing top on goal difference. Now, the difference stands at five places and 23 points in the Premier League table.

Burnley’s struggles have been consistent, with just four wins this season and a prolonged stay in the relegation zone since November. Since dropping out of the top flight in 2022 after six consecutive years, they have alternated between divisions, indicating deeper structural issues.

The current campaign, as well as this result, underlines the need for significant adjustments. Changes will be required if Burnley are to achieve promotion again and become competitive at the highest level.
