Late Lesotho strike sinks Warriors in painful end to World Cup campaign

Zimbabwe’s World Cup qualifying campaign came to a disappointing conclusion last night as they fell 1–0 to Lesotho at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. A stoppage-time strike from Hlompho Kalake sealed victory for Likuena, leaving the Warriors winless and bottom of Group C.

The Warriors began the game on the front foot, enjoying greater possession and almost taking the lead early on when Walter Musona’s effort was fumbled by Lesotho goalkeeper Sekhoane Moerane, who recovered just in time. Despite promising spells of play, Zimbabwe failed to convert their dominance into goals.

Lesotho grew into the match as the first half wore on, forcing Elvis Chipezeze into a nervy double save midway through the half. With both sides failing to find a breakthrough, the teams went into the interval deadlocked at 0–0.

In the second half, Zimbabwe had another golden opportunity to score when Bill Antonio was sent through on goal, but defender Motlomelo Mkwanazi produced a crucial clearance before Antonio could finish. That missed chance proved costly, as Lesotho struck late through Kalake’s curling effort, set up by Neo Mokhachane, to snatch all three points.

The defeat sums up a frustrating campaign for Zimbabwe, who end their qualifiers without a single victory. Head coach Michael Nees later reflected that Zimbabwe’s lack of goals was not just a national team problem but one that reflected a wider scoring drought in the country’s football.

Zimbabwe are now expected to regroup and schedule international friendlies ahead of December’s 2025 AFCON preparations, hoping to rediscover their rhythm and build a sharper attacking edge.
