The Lady Chevrons continue to fly the Zimbabwean flag high in Windhoek, booking their place in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier final – and, more importantly, securing a spot at the Global Qualifier in Nepal – after a clinical five-wicket victory over Uganda Women.
Chasing 120 for victory, our girls showed both grit and flair, reaching the target with 14 balls to spare thanks to a disciplined bowling effort followed by a confident chase.
Nyasha Gwanzura was outstanding with the ball, returning figures of 2/17 in her four overs. She claimed the crucial wickets of Uganda’s skipper Janet Mbabazi (29) and power-hitter Immaculate Nakisuuyi (26), swinging the contest firmly Zimbabwe’s way. Lindokuhle Mabhera backed her up brilliantly with 2/30, while Nomvelo Sibanda and Loreen Tshuma also picked up a wicket each to keep Uganda pegged at 119-7.
In reply, the Lady Chevrons paced their innings smartly. Modester Mupachikwa anchored the top order with a steady 25, while Kelis Ndhlovu (18) and Tshuma (18) kept us ticking over. Captain Chipo Mugeri Tiripano added 14, before Gwanzura once again rose to the occasion – this time with the bat. Her explosive 17 off just six balls, including two towering sixes, shifted momentum firmly in our favour. Beloved Biza then finished the job in style, smashing 16 off five balls with two fours and a six.
Together, Gwanzura and Biza tore into Sarah Akiteng, taking 28 runs off the 17th over, with two sixes even reaching the clubhouse.
This was more than just a win; it was a statement. The Lady Chevrons are not just here to compete – they’re here to qualify. With a place in Nepal secured, Zimbabwe now look ahead to the tournament final against either Namibia or Tanzania, full of belief that the World Cup dream is alive and well.
