Lady Chevrons make history with landmark win over West Indies

The Lady Chevrons have made history.

Zimbabwe Women produced a sensational performance at Harare Sports Club on Sunday, defeating the West Indies by four wickets to record their first-ever victory in the ICC Women’s Championship. It is a landmark moment for the Lady Chevrons and another sign of the progress being made in Zimbabwean women’s cricket.

After winning the toss and choosing to bowl, Zimbabwe’s attack immediately put the West Indies under pressure. The visitors were bowled out for just 139, with experienced West Indies star Stafanie Taylor top-scoring with 47 and captain Hayley Matthews making 26 after making 182 in the previous match.

Nyasha Gwanzura was the star with the ball, producing an outstanding spell of 4/33 from her 10 overs. Michelle Mavunga also played a huge role, claiming 3/36 as Zimbabwe consistently picked up wickets and prevented the West Indies from building any meaningful partnerships.

The chase was not completely straightforward, however. Zimbabwe were given a solid foundation by Modester Mupachikwa, who scored 38, while Kelis Ndhlovu contributed a valuable 30. A middle-order wobble briefly gave the West Indies hope, with Zimbabwe slipping to 105/5.

But this Lady Chevrons side showed composure when it mattered most.

Captain Josephine Nkomo stood up with a crucial 30, helping settle the innings before Gwanzura, having already starred with the ball, finished the job with an unbeaten 18. Zimbabwe reached 140/6 in 40.5 overs to seal a historic four-wicket victory.

This is much more than another win on the scorecard. The West Indies are an established force in international women’s cricket, making Zimbabwe’s achievement even more significant.

For the Lady Chevrons, this is a moment to celebrate and hopefully another building block in what is becoming an exciting chapter for Zimbabwean women’s cricket.
