The Zimbabwe senior women’s cricket team, the Lady Chevrons, showcased their dominance today with a thumping 10-wicket victory over Sierra Leone in their second match of the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier Division One at the FNB Namibia Cricket Ground in Windhoek.
Building on their opening win against hosts Namibia, the Lady Chevrons once again delivered a clinical performance to underline their intent in the tournament. Asked to field first, Zimbabwe’s bowlers stifled Sierra Leone from the start, restricting them to a modest 93/9 in 20 overs.
All-rounder Josephine Nkomo led the bowling attack with an impressive 3/27 from her four-over spell, while Nyasha Gwanzura chipped in with 2/14. Francisca Chipare, Lindokuhle Mabhera, and Loreen Tshuma also claimed a wicket each, ensuring Sierra Leone’s batters never settled. Only Celina Bull offered resistance, scoring 26 runs off 34 balls — the only player to reach double figures for the side.
In response, the Lady Chevrons made light work of the chase. Openers Modester Mupachikwa and Kelis Ndhlovu were in sublime form, guiding Zimbabwe to 94/0 in just 12 overs. Mupachikwa starred with a fluent 51 off 40 balls, her third WT20I half-century, while Ndhlovu supported with a confident 39 off 32 deliveries.
This emphatic result means Zimbabwe remain unbeaten in Group A, with their final group-stage match against Nigeria coming up today.
With the top two teams from each group advancing to the semi-finals, and the finalists earning a place in next year’s global qualifier in Nepal, the Lady Chevrons are well on course to continue their journey toward the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in England and Wales.
