Borussia Dortmund boss Niko Kovac expressed satisfaction after his side earned a 2–1 win over Bayer Leverkusen, praising both the unity of the group and the standout traits of several players.
He acknowledged, however, that the situation became tense late on. Kovac noted that failing to score a third while holding a two-goal cushion can always create risk, but he still felt his squad delivered a strong performance overall. While he believed the opening period lacked sharp attacking play, he saw a clear rise in quality after the break.
Adeyemi’s growth and Anselmino’s mindset
The coach highlighted Karim Adeyemi’s progress, stressing that he frequently reminds the young forward of his exceptional natural tools. Kovac said he regularly talks with Adeyemi about his potential, describing his physical gifts—speed and leaping power—as extraordinary and urging him to use them more often.
Kovac also singled out defender Anselmino, describing him as a model professional. He admired the defender’s competitive edge and his commitment to the fundamentals of his position. According to the coach, modern defenders often prioritize buildup play, but he values those who remain devoted to the primary duty of defending. For Kovac, Anselmino embodies that mentality.
Managing emotions and maintaining discipline
A brief disagreement with striker Serhou Guirassy after the forward was taken off was played down by Kovac, who viewed it as something that occasionally happens during matches. He stated that such matters are always addressed afterward and quickly resolved. Kovac emphasized that he supports Guirassy but expects his decisions on substitutions to be respected.
He also pointed out that Fabio Silva, who replaced Guirassy, delivered the assist for Dortmund’s second goal, reinforcing that every choice is made for the benefit of the team.
Kovac’s remarks reflect his hands-on leadership style as he focuses on tactical clarity, individual improvement, and internal order while Dortmund continue their promising start to the Bundesliga campaign.
