Kasondo strike lifts Dynamos as CAPS stumble in Harare Derby

Joy and despair collided at Rufaro Stadium on Sunday as Dynamos edged city rivals CAPS United 1-0 in a tense Harare Derby with massive relegation implications.

The decisive moment came in the 54th minute when Jairos Kasondo rose to meet a Leeroy Mavunga corner, flashing a header past the CAPS defence and into the net. The goal ignited wild celebrations among the DeMbare faithful, who sang long into the night despite their team being technically listed as the away side. For CAPS fans, the defeat was bitter, with many unable to endure the closing stages, leaving before the final whistle.

The win underlined Dynamos’ resurgence under coach Kelvin Kaindu, who has kept the Glamour Boys unbeaten in nine competitive matches since his arrival. With five wins and a draw in six league outings, he has transformed the team from relegation strugglers to genuine survivors. Dynamos climbed to 15th on 32 points, level with CAPS, though Makepekepe cling to safety by a slender goal difference.

CAPS, however, were left frustrated after wasting several chances. Chris Mugalu headed wide in the first half, while goalkeeper Prince Tafiremutsa produced a brilliant stop from Kundai Benyu’s free-kick to deny them. An injury to defender Bruce Kangwa also disrupted their rhythm.

For Dynamos, the three points felt like six in the context of their battle against the drop. For CAPS, a third consecutive game without a win has plunged them deeper into danger, with their survival hopes hanging in the balance.
