Jackson joins Bayern on loan with obligation to buy

Chelsea attacker Nicolas Jackson has sealed a temporary switch to Bayern Munich, with the Bundesliga side bound to complete a permanent purchase worth £56.2m if he features in a specified number of games.

The Bavarians will hand over an initial £14.3m to secure the 24-year-old for the remainder of the 2025-26 campaign.

Jackson has already agreed to terms for a future five-year stay in Germany. His transfer was briefly uncertain after Chelsea called him back when Liam Delap picked up an injury during Saturday’s victory against Fulham.

Career at Chelsea and playing record

The Senegalese striker arrived at Stamford Bridge from Villarreal for £32m in 2023. During his spell in London, he netted 30 times across 81 outings.

He had been a regular starter until his dismissal at St James’s Park in April, his second red card of the season. That absence left the club short of options up front while chasing Champions League qualification.

Later that year, he was sent off just four minutes after coming off the bench in the 3-1 defeat to Flamengo in the Club World Cup group stage. Although Chelsea lifted the trophy, replacements Liam Delap and Joao Pedro took his spot in attack.

Manager’s view and future prospects

Insiders revealed that Jackson fell out of favor with head coach Enzo Maresca and some figures within the Chelsea hierarchy, leading him to pursue an exit.

This marked a change from earlier in April when Maresca praised him as his “ideal number nine” and even said he wanted “a copy” rather than a replacement.

Speaking after completing his move, Jackson said: “I’m really happy to now be part of this great club. Bayern is one of the best clubs in the world. Everyone knows the names of the legends who’ve played here and knows that this club stands for the greatest success. I’ve got big goals and dreams here and will give my all to help Bayern win further titles.”

Jackson could meet his former side in Munich on 17 September (20:00 BST) in the Champions League, with competition rules allowing loanees to face their parent clubs.
