Hwange inch closer to PSL return

Hwange FC coach Njabulo Dube says his side is better placed than all other teams but must stay focused as they close in on a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League return with two games left.

Chipangano lead the Pacific Breeze Southern Region Soccer League with 73 points from 32 games, four clear of Talen Vision FC on 69 points, with Jordan FC out of the race on 66 points.

“We are better placed than all other teams, but we need to stay focused because we can’t afford to take things for granted,” said Dube.

Hwange have had the best defence so far, conceding only seven goals in 32 matches. Coach Dube credited his players for their understanding, which has led to the clean sheets.

“It is the understanding between the players and their roles as a team. It is every player’s responsibility to understand what he is supposed to do out of possession,” he said.

With a four point lead, Dube said it does not bring any comfort but rather more pressure.

“That’s the most stressful moment of the race, when we need to stay vigilant so that we don’t give room for mistakes. We need to safeguard the lead jealously,” he added.

Dube stressed that no game is a small game for them and they take every game seriously.

“As much as it may look like it’s done, it’s not. But we will take each game as it comes. We need to make sure that we stay focused and don’t get carried away by the four point lead.”

Dube also gave credit to their fans who have been supporting them throughout the season.

“Hwange FC fans are so passionate about their team and that gives us so much encouragement and motivation to bring the Premiership back to the mining town,” he said.

With the race now between two teams after Jordan FC fell away, Dube gave them credit.

“The league reflects, that it’s now a two man race, but I would like to appreciate Jordan FC for doing so well. It shows that there was great competition, but now with two games left, it becomes a two-team race.”

Dube also indicated that this was the toughest season in the Southern Region, having had a hard time balancing the championship race and the Munhumutapa Cup.

“It was when we were participating in the Munhumutapa Cup and at the same time focusing on the league title. Week in, week out we needed to be at our best, and also the issue of travelling in between the games as well as managing fatigue and injuries,” he said.

On PSL readiness, Dube said they are ready.

“We are ready for the PSL, even though there is a lot to be done in other areas. But for now, I think we will be happy for the achievement.”

Hwange have won 22, drawn 7 and lost only 3, scoring 58 and conceding just 7 for a +51 goal difference , the best in the division.

They now need four points from their last two games to guarantee the title, regardless of what Talen Vision does.
