Napoli’s sporting chief Giovanni Manna believes the finalisation of Rasmus Hojlund’s full-time move from Manchester United is practically guaranteed. The Danish attacker, 22, arrived in southern Italy on loan last summer and has struck nine goals for the reigning Serie A winners during his temporary stay.
Hojlund initially left Atalanta for Old Trafford in 2023 for £72m, yet his spell in England produced just four league goals. Despite his eagerness to continue at United, the arrivals of Benjamin Sesko, Matheus Cunha, and Bryan Mbeumo left him with limited opportunities.
Earlier this month, the forward shared an image on social media celebrating the Italian Super Cup, captioned: “What a great decision looks like.” When questioned about whether the permanent deal is a mere procedural step, Manna admitted: “As things stand, I believe so.”
The structure of the transfer
Napoli has negotiated both an option and an obligation to purchase Hojlund as part of the loan. The obligation, however, only activates if Antonio Conte’s side secures a Champions League berth. The fee set at £38m becomes effective once that condition is met.
Currently in third place in Serie A, Napoli would achieve the required qualification if the season concluded today. Given the status of the agreement, Manna stressed that both club and player already view the forward as part of their long-term plans.
Manna told Corriere dello Sport that the club exerted maximum effort to land him initially. He highlighted that other, more historically decorated sides expressed interest, but the player’s personal preference played a decisive role.
Player and club aligned
The sporting director praised the striker’s commitment, noting that Hojlund identifies as a Napoli player already. He added that this shared mindset is vital for the future and reflects mutual satisfaction.
Manna said that the club are proud of the capture, particularly due to the competition for his signature. He described the move as a point of pride, emphasising how significant the player’s determination was in reaching an agreement.
With the team positioned to return to Europe’s premier competition, the completion of the purchase appears imminent. Should qualification be confirmed, the obligation clause will ensure the move becomes permanent.
