Herentals Edge Tel One FC in Thrilling Encounter Amid Controversy at Rufaro Stadium

Herentals claimed their first victory of the season in a fiercely contested 2-1 win over Tel One FC on Saturday, though the match was not without drama as a contentious second-half tackle overshadowed the home side’s late winner.

The hosts dominated proceedings from the outset, showcasing relentless energy in the first half. Herentals carved out multiple chances early on, with strategic and well-executed through balls and passes. A lack of composure in front of goal, however, saw the Students squander three clear opportunities that could have put them comfortably ahead. Their persistence finally paid off in the 34th minute when Dombo delivered a pinpoint cross from the left flank, met by Charma’s emphatic two-touch volley that flew past Tel One goalkeeper Mverechena.

Tel One, sluggish in the opening exchanges, regrouped after the break. Their equaliser arrived in the 59th minute through a well-worked move: Bero whipped a high cross into the box from the right wing, and forward Navaya pounced with a clinical tap-in. The visitors grew into the game, displaying improved defensive resilience and midfield control, but Herentals refused to relent.

Controversy struck in the 82nd minute when Herentals’ debut midfielder Sangare netted the winner on debut. The build-up, however, drew frustration from Tel One players and supporters alike. Benza’s challenge on Herentals’ Mafirenyika five metres from the penalty area line was deemed legal by the referee, despite protests that the tackle was reckless. Herentals capitalised on the turnover, with Mafirenyika releasing Sangare, who calmly slotted home to send the home crowd into raptures.

Herentals climbs to first in the Premier Soccer League, while Tel One will rue missed opportunities as they plummet to fifteenth. Both sides return to action next weekend, with Herentals eager to build momentum and Tel One desperate to bounce back.
