Hardrock vs Scottland:Kasongo’s maiden crown bid collides with Mabviravira’s dream of back-to-back glory

The Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title race has taken another dramatic twist, with Hardrock emerging as the team to beat after dethroning defending champions Scottland from the summit in a nail-bitting battle that is threatening to go down to the wire.
With four matches remaining, the Kwekwe-based newcomers have seized control of the championship race, opening a two-point lead over Scottland following a decisive weekend in which the two title contenders experienced contrasting fortunes.
Kelvin Kaindu’s charges moved to 63 points after beating Bulawayo Chiefs 2-0 at Chahwanda Stadium, while Scottland remained on 61 points after suffering a shock 1-0 defeat to ZPC Kariba at Nyamhunga Stadium.
The results have shifted the balance of power and placed the Kwekwe-based debutants in a commanding position as the season reaches its business end.
But while Hardrock have the advantage, the championship is far from decided.
What will give Hardrock confidence is the fact that in June, Scottland thumped Manica Dimaonds and went 8 points at the top of the table but it is them (Hardrock), who are now on top with four matches remaining.
For Hardrock, the stakes are equally high. A club that entered the Premiership with survival as its ‘primary objective’ is now on the verge of achieving something extraordinary: winning the league in its first season among Zimbabwe’s football elite.
Hardrock’s rise has been one of the defining stories of the 2026 campaign.
Under Kaindu, the newcomers have developed into a formidable outfit capable of grinding out results when the pressure is at its highest. Their organisation, resilience and ability to find goals from different sources have helped them sustain a championship challenge that few would have predicted before the season began.
Hardrock riding the crest of a wave
Their 2-0 victory over Amakhosi was another important statement of intent. Washington Navaya converted from the penalty spot to thrust Hardrock ahead, taking his league tally to 17 goals.
The reigning Golden Boot winner, who also netted 17 goals for TelOne last season, has continued to provide the cutting edge required in a title race where even a single goal can determine the destination of the title.
However, Hardrock’s strength extends beyond their leading marksman. Their capacity to share the scoring responsibility has made them difficult opponents to contain, while their growing belief has transformed them from outsiders into genuine favourites.
The challenge now is to maintain that momentum. Leading the championship is one thing; holding on to the advantage when every opponent wants to derail the title dream is another.
The Kasongo Boys have won more games than anyone on the league (19) and scored the most goals (53).
Up next for them, is a make or break crunch encounter against Harare giants Dynamos at Rufaro next weekend.
Scottland have no room for complacency
Scottland’s defeat in Kariba could hardly have come at a worse time.
Having entered the weekend at the top of the standings, Mabviravira needed a positive result to protect their advantage. Instead, Brian Kusinyeri’s decisive strike handed ZPC Kariba a valuable victory and left Norman Mapeza’s men chasing the leaders.
The former Warriors captain though, insits the title race is far from being decided.
Scottland have the resources, experience and squad depth to recover. Their championship credentials remain unquestionable, and their ability to compete consistently at the highest level means they cannot be written off simply because they have surrendered top spot.
Every remaining match now carries enormous significance, and another slip-up could leave their title defence dependent on Hardrock dropping points.
For Mapeza, the task is to restore confidence, and to make sure Saturday’s disappointing afternoon in Kariba does not become the beginning of a costly late-season collapse.
The battle of two different football journeys
What makes this contest particularly compelling is the contrast between the two clubs.
Scottland are defending champions seeking to establish themselves as a dominant force in Zimbabwean football. Their project has been built around ambition, quality and the expectation of success.
Hardrock, meanwhile, are pursuing a historic breakthrough. Their journey from the lower divisions to the brink of Premiership glory has captured the imagination of football followers who appreciate the possibility of a newcomer upsetting the established order.
Yet the difference in their journeys has not translated into a difference in determination.
Both teams understand that this is an opportunity to define their respective histories. For Scottland, winning again would confirm that last season’s triumph was not a fluke.
The psychological contest could therefore prove just as important as the tactical one.
Four matches to decide everything
With four games left, the title race has entered its decisive phase.
Hardrock travel to Harare to face Dynamos before hosting MWOS. Kaindu’s men then travel to Shamva for a date with former champions Simba Bhora, before welcoming a resurgent FC Platinum on the final weekend of the season.
Interestingly, Tonderai Ndiraya- the coach who guided Scottland to the title in their maiden season last year, will have a say in the ultimate destination of the championship as his Chicken Inn stand in the way of Mabviravira’s quest for glory.
The two sides meet next week, before Scottland take on CAPS United the following week.
Mabviravira then host Herentals College before traveling to Chiredzi for a date with Triangle United.
For now, the advantage belongs to Hardrock, but Scottland remain close enough to turn the race around if they rediscover their winning rhythm.
The final four matches will determine whether Hardrock complete a remarkable rise to the summit or Scottland summon the resilience required to retain their crown.
One thing is certain: the 2026 Castle Lager Premier Soccer League title race is no longer simply about who has the better squad. It is about nerve, consistency and the ability to deliver when the stakes are highest.
The trophy is within Hardrock’s reach, but Scottland will certainly put up a fight.
