Ackim Gwaendepi, the former Mutare City Rovers FC centre back, is trading in his boots for a coaching badge.
The 31-year-old acquired his CAF C licence in South Africa last year and is eyeing a full-time coaching role.
Gwaendepi, who had a decorated playing career with clubs like Bulawayo giants Highlanders FC, Green Fuel FC, Renco Mine FC, Matobo FC, and Rusitu Tigers FC, was a vital cog in Mutare City Rovers’ defence last season, helping them to a sixth-place finish in the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League.
”I’m excited to have earned my CAF C licence – it’s a solid first step,” he told Fanzone. “As a Christian, I’m still praying that God guides the transition so that I step into full-time coaching at the right time.”
St Paul’s Musami FC, who were relegated from the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League, are reportedly in advanced talks to appoint Gwaendepi as their new head coach.
When asked about the rumour, he played the diplomatic card, “I’ve indeed gotten calls from a few clubs, not just one, and I’m grateful for the interest. It’s a big decision, so I’m taking my time, leaning on family and, most importantly, on the Almighty to help me choose the path that’s best for me and the game.”
Gwaendepi believes discipline is key to success in Zimbabwean football.
”From what I’ve seen, the Zimbabwean league needs coaches who put long-term player development first. Results matter, sure, but the real job is shaping behaviour and mindset on the pitch,” he said.
Looking back on his playing career, Gwaendepi credits Bosso for shaping him.
At Bosso he rose through the ranks from the developmental side in 2006, before signing his professional contract in 2013.
”At Highlanders discipline stood out as the one thing that lifted less-gifted players to higher levels. That lesson stays with me; I plan to make discipline a cornerstone of my coaching, passing on the same patience and work ethic that shaped my own career.”
