From Almiron’s words to Everton’s hero

Jack Grealish has quickly established himself as a key figure at Everton since joining on loan from Manchester City. The England international’s performances have earned him admiration from supporters, adding another chapter to his eventful career.

His journey has not been without controversy, however. Grealish once made remarks about Miguel Almiron that resurfaced months later, prompting him to address the situation publicly and express regret.

Title triumph and controversial comment

In 2022, during his debut campaign at City, Grealish celebrated winning the Premier League title after a dramatic final-day comeback against Aston Villa. Pep Guardiola’s side overturned a two-goal deficit to win 3–2, edging Liverpool to the championship by a single point for the second time in four seasons.

Although Grealish initially struggled to adapt to Guardiola’s demanding system, that didn’t dampen his celebrations. At the club’s parade, he was asked about the turnaround, and in a joking manner, he suggested that Mahrez should have been substituted “because he played like Almiron.” At the time, Almiron had endured a tough season with Newcastle, scoring just once in 32 matches.

Regret and reconciliation

Months later, during the 2022/23 season, Grealish spoke about the incident, admitting he regretted the comment. He explained that the video was filmed the day after the season ended, when he had been drinking, and that it was meant to remain private. “I do some stupid stuff sometimes that I regret,” he told the Daily Mail, recalling how he was in Ibiza when the clip emerged.

By then, Almiron was enjoying his best spell at Newcastle, finishing the season with 11 goals. He responded graciously, calling Grealish a top player and wishing him well. Grealish took note of the gesture and responded with respect, saying he admired how Almiron handled the situation. He even reached out to Matt Targett, a former teammate, to pass along a personal apology, acknowledging that his words were inappropriate even in private.

A fresh start on Merseyside

Despite winning seven trophies in four years at Manchester City, Grealish’s form dipped last season, when he scored just once in the league. His loan move to Everton has brought a resurgence. Under David Moyes, he has rediscovered his spark, becoming an influential figure in a team that sits eighth in the Premier League table after seven games.
