Former Great Zimbabwe University live wire embarks on Northern Region Soccer League sojourn

‎Former Great Zimbabwe University attacking midfielder Shawn Mupesa has joined Northern Region Soccer League side Marere FC on a one-year contract.

‎Mupesa, who was a regular feature for GZU FC, missing only one game due to suspension, had an impressive outing in the 2025 Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League, helping his team finish 11th.

‎With 15 assists and 12 man-of-the-match awards to his name, Mupesa’s impressive season earned him a spot as a finalist in the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League Soccer Stars calendar.

‎Given his remarkable performances, it was no surprise he attracted attention from several teams, but Marere FC ultimately won the battle for his signature.

‎Speaking to Fanzone on his decision to join Marere FC, Mupesa revealed that it wasn’t an easy choice, but ultimately, the offers from Marere FC were too good to ignore.

‎”Well, what I can say is it wasn’t my option to leave Great Zimbabwe University but I did not have no choice on it because of all the offers I had the Marere one was more better,” he said.

‎Looking ahead to the new season, Mupesa is eager to make an impact with his new team. “As for Marere FC, I’m hoping to give the best of myself to the team like I was doing to GZU because I’m new to the team and it’s also good because of a new challenge, I’m pushing harder to achieve more this season like I was last season and being on the Northern Region Soccer Stars calendar,” said Mupesa.

‎Marere FC will face MWOS this weekend as the 2026 Northern Region Soccer League kicks off and Mupesa is optimistic about their chances.

‎When asked about the team’s expectations, he said, “As a team, we are pushing harder because the team is new in the league, but the players are not new in the league, so we have to adapt and give our best and will come up with something.”

‎On comparisons between the Pacific Storm Eastern Region Soccer League and the Northern Region Soccer League, Mupesa is taking things one step at a time. “As for the league, it’s my first time playing Northern Region, so for the meantime I can’t compare because last season it was my first time again playing for Eastern Region again. So I will just accept everything that is coming for the Northern Region,” added Mupesa.
