Former Dynamos striker Phillip Marufu is linked with a sensational return to his former club, Chapungu albeit in a coaching capacity, it has emerged.
Marufu who retired a few years ago starred for Chapungu for over a decade in a career that also saw him play for Harare giants Dynamos and Black Rhinos along the way. At the peak of his career he also earned a significant number of national team caps.
The former Chapungu captain played in the CAF Champions League semi-finals in 2008 when he was on loan at Dynamos.
Having retired and ventured into coaching, Marufu is one of the frontrunners to take charge of the Gweru based side in the 2026 Central Region Soccer League.
Tast season, Chapungu were dampened following the death of coach Tawanda Marimo who had been steering their ship.
Tererai Zvinyowera and former Shabanie Mine anchorman Tafadzwa Mombeshora steadied the team and ensured they achieved a top eight finish.
However, the club intends to beef up their coaching department with Marufu, a Chapungu icon who has been honing his coaching skills.
An announcement of the changes is expected in the first week of February, as the team is focused on gaining the PSL promotion ticket. They were relegated from the top flight in 2019 and have been in the Central Region Soccer league, striving to make a comeback into the Premier Soccer League. But all their efforts have hit a snag.
In addition, Brighton Mugoni, a former Chapungu player himself, is set to be included in the set-up after spending the 2025 season at MSU FC.
Meanwhile, Marufu is also the founder of Midlands Elite Sports Academy which was established in 2024, in collaboration with Collen Nyambiya.
