Ederson leaves Manchester City for Fenerbahce

Brazilian goalkeeper Ederson has completed a permanent switch from Manchester City to Turkish club Fenerbahçe. The 32-year-old departs after eight years with the English champions, during which he played 372 games in all competitions following his £35m arrival from Benfica in 2017.

Fenerbahce has paid £12.1m to secure the deal. During his time in Manchester, Ederson helped secure six league trophies, a Champions League title, and two FA Cups. His contributions also played a key role in the historic treble during the 2022-23 campaign.

Legacy and personal words

The Brazilian recorded 122 clean sheets in 276 top-flight appearances while also providing seven assists. Only Bruce Grobbelaar, formerly of Liverpool, shares the distinction of six English top-division titles as a goalkeeper.

Reflecting on his time in Manchester, Ederson said he felt immense pride at the club’s achievements and expressed gratitude for working under Pep Guardiola. He described the period as the most meaningful of his career, noting that although he leaves with his family, he will always consider himself a lifelong supporter of City.

City’s future in goal

Manchester City have already moved to reinforce their squad. James Trafford was signed from Burnley earlier this summer, and a £26m agreement has been reached for Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain, who is set to join on a five-year contract.

City’s director of football, Hugo Viana, praised Ederson’s consistency and influence, stating that his presence and courage had been vital to the team’s style and success, securing his place among the club’s greats.
