Newcastle United manager Eddie Howe has acknowledged the uncertainty surrounding Alexander Isak’s current situation, calling it “far from straightforward.” The Swedish forward was left out of the club’s pre-season trip to Asia due to what was described by Newcastle as a minor thigh problem. Despite this, Isak has recently been seen training individually at his former club, Real Sociedad — something Howe said he learned about through media reports.
Isak is reportedly set to return to Tyneside on Saturday and is expected to rejoin the squad for training as scheduled. However, the ongoing developments have added to what Howe described as a complicated and less-than-ideal scenario.
Record bid rejected
Liverpool submitted a substantial £110 million offer for Isak on Friday, but the bid was turned down by Newcastle, who are understood to value the 25-year-old closer to £150 million. Howe confirmed he was made aware of the offer only after it had been declined and emphasized that matters relating to the transfer are being handled by club officials in England, while he focuses on the pre-season tour.
Howe was cautious when discussing Isak’s situation further, noting that he is not in direct communication with the player at the moment. “I don’t have full insight into everything that’s happening back home,” he stated during Saturday’s press conference.
Manager’s hopes for the striker
Isak arrived at St James’ Park in 2022 from La Liga side Real Sociedad in a £60 million deal. Since then, he has become a key figure for Newcastle, finishing as the club’s leading scorer last season. His contributions were vital in helping the Magpies win the Carabao Cup, securing their first domestic trophy in 70 years.
Despite the current uncertainty, Howe reiterated his support for the striker and expressed his desire to see Isak remain at the club. “Our backing for Alex is still there,” Howe said. “Ideally, I want to see him continue in our colours.”
Newcastle are currently in South Korea and will face Tottenham in Seoul on Sunday. They are scheduled to kick off their Premier League campaign against Aston Villa on 16 August.
