Harare Sports Club hosted an energetic weekend of rugby as the Zambezi 7s returned, bringing together some of the region’s strongest sevens sides for a fast-paced and competitive showcase. The event highlighted the continued growth of sevens rugby in Southern Africa, with Zimbabwe’s Cheetahs producing exciting phases of play, improved defensive organisation, and flashes of individual brilliance that had the home supporters on their feet.
Although the visiting Kenyan outfit secured the men’s title after an impressive unbeaten run, Zimbabwe demonstrated clear signs of progress throughout the competition. The Cheetahs displayed greater composure with ball in hand, stronger breakdown efficiency, and more fluid support play — areas the technical team has prioritised as preparations intensify for the upcoming Challenger Series and Olympic pathway fixtures.
Zimbabwe’s attacking style particularly caught the eye, with sharp offloads and pace out wide consistently stretching opposing defences. Several rising stars also stepped up confidently, indicating welcome depth and growing maturity within the squad.
The weekend also featured a vibrant women’s competition, with both Zimbabwe and Zambia fielding two teams each. The Warthogs — Zimbabwe’s women’s national sevens side — reached the final where they faced Zambia’s Impalas. In a thrilling encounter that showcased fierce determination and athletic skill, the Impalas edged the contest 19-12 to lift the women’s trophy.
Although the atmosphere in Harare was somewhat quieter compared to previous years, the tournament once again demonstrated Zimbabwe’s ability to host high-quality rugby events. Despite the Cheetahs narrowly missing out on the men’s title, the growth and direction of Zimbabwean sevens rugby is evident. With continued investment, consistent competition and focus, the signs from Harare show a programme building steadily — and with much to look forward to.
