The Cheetahs headed to the Mauritius 7s over the weekend with hopes of lifting the title – and while the trophy narrowly eluded them, the team put on an encouraging performance that brought home a well-earned bronze medal.
In the group stages, the Cheetahs showed dominance and composure. They opened with a confident 31-17 win over Tunisia before dispatching hosts Mauritius 42-7. Their toughest pool match came against Madagascar, but they held firm to win 21-7 and top their group.
The quarter-final clash against Ghana was another solid showing, as the Cheetahs advanced to the semi-finals where they faced a formidable South Africa A side. In what turned out to be a fiercely contested battle, the Cheetahs narrowly lost 19-12, setting up a bronze medal showdown with Kenya.
Kenya started strongly, scoring two quick tries to take a 12-0 lead in the opening five minutes. However, the Cheetahs responded with grit and determination. A spirited comeback saw them edge past their neighbours 21-19, securing a place on the podium.
Head coach Rickey Chirengende can take pride in his side’s display, although there may be questions around preparation. The squad included five players currently involved in the Sables XVs camp – Dion Khumalo, Tino Mavesere, Edward Sigauke, Ryan Musumhi, and Trevor Gurwe – a factor that may have limited the team’s time together. Chirengende’s dual role as assistant coach to the Sables adds to the challenge.
Still, there are plenty of positives to take from the weekend. The Cheetahs showed heart, talent, and flashes of brilliance. With better preparation and more time in camp, this side looks capable of going all the way. Fans will now hope that silverware isn’t too far off.
