Hardrock’s 13-0 victory over Gokwe North in the Central Region Soccer League has, expectedly, had tongues wagging.
Calvin Maphosa’s charges were rampant against Gokwe, with Donald Ngoma netting a record six goals in a victory that has generated a lot of debate among football stakeholders, not only in the region but across the entire football spectrum.
The battle for the sole ticket to the Premier Soccer League is threatening to turn Midlands into a war zone, with accusations of bias on the part of the Central Region administration, as well as match manipulation claims, now the order of the day.
The Patrick Hill-led Central Region Soccer League, though, insists the winner will be determined only on the pitch.
“As we approach the climax of the league season, we wish to address the recent media reports that have sought to undermine the integrity of our competition through unfounded allegations,” the league said in a statement.
“It is imperative to emphasize that these claims are not only baseless but also pose a significant threat to the stability and progress of football in our region.
“We reaffirm our unwavering commitment to fair play and
sportsmanship. The outcome of our
league will be determined on the pitch, where skill, strategy, and determination will be the
deciding factors.
“We urge all parties to engage in responsible communication, ensuring that statements are factual and constructive.
“The Region expects all member clubs to uphold the highest standards of ethics and integrity in their participation. Any actions that compromise the integrity of the game will be met with swift and decisive disciplinary measures.
“We categorically reject all unfounded allegations and misinformation being circulated through various media articles with the intent to destabilize our league. Such actions are detrimental to the spirit of competition and the welfare of our
players, officials, Sponsors, and fans.”
While those in the truth-telling business will agree that 13-0 is a rare scoreline, it also has to be noted that it’s not the first time there has been a scoreline of that nature in the Central Region Soccer League.
Just last season, Sheasham themselves, who for obvious reasons are skeptical of the competitiveness of Hardrock’s 13-0 victory over Gokwe, thumped Bishopstone 11-0 on June 29.
Ayanda Ncube netted a hat trick while Blessing Munana and Physwell Madhazi weighed in with braces.
The Gweru-based outfit, who at some point were six points clear at the summit of the table, have had their lead reduced to just two by Hardrock, with seven fixtures remaining.
Sheasham, who make the short trip to MSU compass for a date with relegation-threatened MSU this afternoon, occupy top spot with 69 points from 27 matches.
Hardrock welcome Blanket Mine at Baghdad, as the title race looks to go straight to the wire.
We will see what happens.
