Carragher defends Gyokeres after another quiet match

Viktor Gyokeres experienced another quiet outing when facing one of the Premier League’s top clubs, Manchester City, on Sunday. His difficulties mirror previous matches against top-tier opposition, including a disappointing performance in the loss to Liverpool earlier this month and a subdued display in the win at Manchester United in August.

This recent struggle contrasts sharply with his form against teams lower in the table. Gyokeres scored three goals in two games against Leeds United and Nottingham Forest, highlighting the difference in his effectiveness against weaker defenses compared to elite opposition.

Limited involvement at the Emirates

Gyokeres had minimal impact in Sunday’s match, registering no shots and touching the ball just 24 times during the full 90 minutes. This was the fewest touches by any player on the field, underlining his lack of involvement in Manchester City’s half. Despite playing the entire match, he found it difficult to assert himself against City’s organized defensive setup.

Carragher attributes struggles to team play

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher defended Gyokeres after the game, suggesting the striker’s difficulties stem from his teammates rather than his own performance. Speaking on Sky Sports, Carragher pointed out that Gyokeres had not received meaningful opportunities in recent big games, which has fueled criticism over his suitability as a title-winning striker.

Carragher said: “He hasn’t had a kick today and he might get criticism again on the back of the game today, but I don’t think in those three games he’s had a chance. They haven’t created a chance for him.” He emphasized that Gyokeres’ lack of contribution is a result of the team failing to generate chances rather than a reflection of the striker’s quality.
