Brian Banda: A young life cut short by tragedy

Brian Banda should have been 30 in three months’ time.

The diminutive Warriors and FC Platinum midfielder was born on September 9, 1995, in Entumbane, Bulawayo.

At 29, BB, as Banda was affectionately known, had built a house for his mother in Cowdry Park and was in the process of creating one for himself in the City of Kings.

The soft-spoken midfield ace had just been blessed with a boy, who was two weeks old and had not met his father.
Everything appeared to be going well for Banda until tragedy struck.

He was involved in a car accident along the Zvishavane-Bulawayo Road last Sunday and died on the spot, plunging the local football fraternity into mourning.

The statement released by FC Platinum announcing Banda’s death portrayed a vivid picture of the tragedy that had befallen the club.

“We are deeply saddened to share the news of Brian Banda’s passing, which occurred today, June 29, 2025, in a car accident on the Zvishavane-Bulawayo road. Tragically, he lost his life at the scene, and FC Platinum has suffered the loss of a remarkable player. We kindly request that everyone respect his family’s privacy during this difficult time as they grieve,” read the statement.

“Go well, Brian Banda. FC Platinum has lost not only a talented athlete but also a beloved teammate and friend. Brian’s dedication to the sport and his infectious enthusiasm both on and off the field left an indelible mark on all who knew him. His contributions to the team were invaluable, and his spirit will continue to inspire us.

“In these challenging moments, let us remember the joy and passion Brian brought into our lives.

“We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who held him dear. May his legacy live on in the hearts of those he touched, and may his memory be a source of comfort and strength.”

ZIFA president Nqobile Magwizi described Banda as a humble front-runner.

“We are devastated by the loss of Brian Banda. He was a remarkable footballer and a humble leader, both on and off the field. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, his teammates at FC Platinum, and all those who were touched by his life and career. Zimbabwean football has lost one of its finest,” said Magwizi.

How Banda’s teammate Devine Mhindirira wept uncontrollably at the funeral yesterday summarised the pain the late midfielder’s close ones are feeling.

He will be laid to rest at Lady Stanley Cemetery in Bulawayo tomorrow.
