The U20 Young Mighty Warriors concluded their World Cup qualification journey with a valiant effort in Kigali yesterday, where they played out a goalless draw against Rwanda at the Kigali Pele Stadium.
Having narrowly lost the first leg 2-1 on Monday, Zimbabwe needed a win to progress to the next round of the qualifiers. Both teams came into the match with intent, creating several chances in the opening half, but neither side could find the breakthrough. At the half-time whistle, the score remained 0-0, with Rwanda still holding a 2-1 lead on aggregate.
In the second half, Zimbabwe pushed forward in search of the crucial goal, but the pace and energy that had carried them through earlier stages began to fade. Rwanda, sensing the pressure, opted for a more defensive approach, effectively shutting down Zimbabwe’s attacking efforts by “parking the bus” and holding firm until the final whistle.
Although the 0-0 result meant Zimbabwe missed out on qualification for the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup, the campaign has been one of growth and promise. Participating in the African qualifiers is a major achievement, and this experience will only strengthen the Young Mighty Warriors for future challenges ahead.
