Edoardo Bove returned to the Stadio Olimpico to bid farewell as discussions continue over ending his Roma contract, paving the way for a move abroad to Watford, where he aims to resume playing with an implanted cardiac defibrillator.
Seen in the stands alongside his partner, the midfielder received a warm reception from supporters, who rose to applaud and chant “One of us” in recognition of his journey and connection to the club.
Medical emergency that shocked Italian football
The football community was left deeply concerned in December 2024 when Bove suddenly collapsed during a Fiorentina match against Inter. The incident brought the game to a halt and prompted urgent medical attention.
Following the episode, he underwent an operation to fit a cardiac defibrillator, a device designed to intervene if dangerous heart rhythm problems occur again. While several professionals elsewhere compete with similar equipment, Italian regulations prohibit athletes from participating with such devices in place.
Regulations forcing a move overseas
Because of these restrictions, continuing his career in Serie A is not an option. The situation mirrors that of Christian Eriksen, who was required to end his Inter deal after suffering cardiac arrest and receiving the same type of implant while representing Denmark at EURO 2020.
Bove’s temporary spell with Fiorentina concluded in June 2025, yet he is still tied to Roma. That agreement is expected to be brought to an end in the coming weeks, allowing him to seek opportunities beyond Italy’s borders.
A young career shaped at Roma
At just 23, Bove is a product of Roma’s academy system and progressed into the senior side, making 77 top-flight appearances. Across those outings, he found the net three times and registered five assists.
His appearance at the Olimpico served as both a goodbye and a reminder of his roots, as he prepares to take the next step of his professional life outside Italy.
