Barcelona extended Fermín López’s contract until 2031

Barcelona have officially extended their agreement with Fermin Lopez, with the midfielder now committed to the club until 2031. His previous contract still had four years remaining, but the Catalan side chose to act early following a standout calendar year.

At just 22, Lopez has continued his upward trajectory, strengthening his case in the first team and pushing Dani Olmo for a regular role. Since breaking through during Xavi Hernandez’s tenure, his influence has only increased under current head coach Hansi Flick.

Rising output and growing importance

Lopez’s attacking contribution surged during the latter stages of last season, when he emerged as one of Barcelona’s most reliable sources of goals. Across that period, he delivered 10 strikes and provided eight assists.

That momentum has carried into the current campaign. He has already reached double figures for both goals and assists, underlining his consistency. With Raphinha and Olmo sidelined for extended spells, the scoring responsibility has increasingly fallen on Lopez alongside Marcus Rashford.

Over his Barcelona career so far, the Spain international has accumulated 29 goals and 22 assists in 114 appearances. When measured by time spent on the pitch, he averages a direct involvement in a goal every 109 minutes.

Transfer interest and international ambitions

During the summer, Barcelona were reportedly open to a possible departure as they looked to manage financial constraints. Chelsea made a late approach, but Lopez chose to remain at the club, despite suggestions that the Premier League side retained interest.

The newly signed agreement includes a substantial salary increase and adds two extra seasons to his stay, despite his previous renewal being relatively recent. His buyout clause has now been fixed at €500 million, effectively shutting down outside pursuit.

Looking ahead, Lopez faces intense competition at international level. With the World Cup approaching this summer, he will be fighting for selection in Spain’s squad, particularly against Olmo, who rivals him for the central attacking role at both club and national level.
