Barcelona are close to winning another La Liga title

FC Barcelona took another decisive step toward the La Liga title with a composed 2-0 win away at Getafe, extending their lead at the summit to 11 points with five matches remaining. In a potentially awkward fixture (Barcelona have not won at the Coliseum since 2019), the Catalans stayed patient before Fermín López broke the deadlock just before half-time after a precise Pedri through ball.
Getafe remained competitive for long stretches, but Barça’s control eventually told, and Marcus Rashford sealed the victory in the second half with a powerful counterattacking finish. It was Barcelona’s ninth consecutive league win and another display of a side that is looking inevitable. Now attention turns to the defining stretch.
If Real Madrid fails to beat Espanyol, Barcelona could secure the title even before the next El Clasico. If Madrid wins, then they will be fighting to not allow their bitter rivals to claim a championship by defeating them at Camp Nou.
Why this Barcelona side have pushed Madrid into the background
This season has reinforced the notion that Real Madrid remains globally powerful thanks to their pedigree in international and intercontinental competitions, but Barcelona are chipping away at their historical domestic advantage fast.
Under Hansi Flick, Barcelona has looked sharper, more coherent, and tactically superior for much of the campaign, while Madrid’s season has been a mixed bag filled with dropped points, inconsistency, and an inability to match Barcelona’s relentless pace that looks nowhere near being solved.
The upcoming Clasico is therefore not just another headline fixture for Flick’s team. It is a Clasico that could symbolise and officially recognise the current power balance in Spain. A Barcelona victory would not only secure another league crown but further underline how much the pendulum has swung toward Catalonia in recent decades.
One or two wins from glory
Barcelona only needs to maintain their level for just a little longer. Their form suggests they are highly unlikely to collapse, and their blend of attacking variety, midfield control, and defensive maturity has made them the most complete team in Spain this season.
Real Madrid still possess enough talent to complicate matters: Kylian Mbappé is the league’s leading goal scorer, and their defence is second only to Barcelona in clean sheets and goals conceded. Still, the title race increasingly feels like Barcelona’s to finish rather than Madrid’s to rescue.
It is safe to say that Barcelona will win the 2025/26 La Liga and close the gap with Madrid, as they are now within one or two victories of confirming what this season has consistently shown, whether through Madrid slipping against Espanyol or through a statement Clasico win. They are once again Spain’s dominant force.
