Real Madrid have returned to the summit of La Liga following a determined 3-1 triumph over Villarreal at the Santiago Bernabéu. Vinícius Júnior struck twice and Kylian Mbappé added another to secure the points for Xabi Alonso’s side. Madrid will hold first place if Barcelona fail to collect three points against Sevilla on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking after the match, Alonso reflected on the overall performance. “It was a demanding, disciplined game,” he told reporters. “The opening goal was difficult to get, but the team stayed focused and Vinícius delivered. In the second half, we had chances to finish it earlier.”
Vinícius shines, Valverde adapts
The Brazilian winger proved decisive once again, tormenting Villarreal’s defence throughout. Alonso was full of praise for his number seven. “He was excellent, not just because he scored,” the coach said. “He caused Mouriño a lot of trouble. I like seeing him happy—it’s good for him and for the group. We wanted to close this stretch of games positively.”
Alonso also highlighted Federico Valverde’s contribution. The Uruguayan lined up at right-back, a role he has reportedly been reluctant to take on. “He delivered a strong performance on the flank,” Alonso explained. “He always gives his all, wherever he’s asked to play. He was key during transitions. He’s generous and never refuses to help the team.”
Mbappé and Mastantuono pick up injuries
The only negatives for Madrid came with fitness concerns for Mbappé and Franco Mastantuono, who were both substituted in the second half. Alonso confirmed the situations: “Kylian felt something in his ankle, and Franco has a hamstring overload. Their national teams will assess them. We can’t say whether Mbappé will join France yet—they will decide. If things get worse, he won’t be available, but right now there’s nothing definitive.”
