Alleged player boycott at Highlanders amid bonus dispute

Reports suggest that players from Highlanders FC refused to train at Barbourfields Stadium on Thursday, apparently due to unpaid winning bonuses and outstanding sign-on fees. Sources indicate some athletes claim sign-on payments from as far back as 2024 remain unsettled.

The protest follows the club’s recent receipt of US$250,000 from businessman Wicknell Chivayo—part of a US$1 million donation pledged to the club four months ago. The funds were reportedly earmarked for player welfare, recruitment and administrative support.

With just three matches remaining, Highlanders sit just two points above the relegation zone in 10th place, making the timing of this dispute all the more critical. The squad has allegedly threatened to extend the boycott to Saturday’s PSL Matchday 32 fixture against Simba Bhora if the club’s leadership does not immediately address the financial concerns.

The situation places significant pressure on both the team and club management at a decisive stage of the season. Fans and stakeholders will be watching closely to see whether Highlanders can reconcile internal issues and refocus on the pitch.
