All you need to know about Warriors’ foe: Sierra Leone
The Warriors’ road to the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations begins tonight against unfamiliar opposition.
Zimbabwe open their Group E qualifying campaign against Sierra Leone at the Stade Ben Ahmed El Abdi in El Jadida, Morocco, kicking off at 20:00 CAT. It will be the first ever meeting between the two nations at senior level.
The fixture is being played on neutral ground as a result of Sierra Leone’s failure to have a CAF-approved stadium. Due to the lack of an approved venue in Freetown, the Leone Stars are forced to host their home qualifiers in Morocco, stripping them of true home advantage.
According to the latest FIFA rankings Sierra Leone sit 122nd in the world, eight places above Zimbabwe who are 130th. The Leone Stars peaked at 50th in August 2014, while the Warriors’ highest mark was 40th in April 1995.
There is no head-to-head history to lean on, so recent form tells the story.
Sierra Leone have endured a mixed run, suffering a 3-1 defeat to Liberia in an international friendly before avenging it with a 1-0 win over the same opponents, drawing 1-1 with Azerbaijan in a friendly, edging Djibouti 2-1 in a CAF World Cup qualifier and losing 1-0 to Burkina Faso in World Cup qualifying.
Zimbabwe’s run has come in major competitions, beating India 1-0 at the Unity Cup in the United Kingdom before losing 2-0 to Nigeria in the same tournament, then winning the Mukuru Four Nations invitational in Botswana by beating Botswana 3-0 in the semi-final and Zambia 1-0 in the final.
Their last outing was the 3-2 thriller defeat to South Africa during the group stage of the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.
Coached by Frenchman Didier Gomes Da Rosa, the Leone Stars are dynamic and have employed a 4-3-3 formation to control midfield.
They are a physical, high-intensity side built on aggressive pressing to win the ball high up the pitch, quick counter-attacks and exploiting the flanks with pace. Their approach leads to more fouls and yellow cards but also creates chaos from crosses and set-pieces.
Captain Osman Kakay (Kosice FC – Slovakia) provides leadership, Abdulai Juma Bah (Augsburg FC – Germany) anchors the defence and midfielder Sullay Kaikai (Cambridge United – England) carries the creative threat.
Other key figures in the squad include goalkeeper Mamadou Jalloh, midfielder Mustapha Hindolo (Notts County), and forwards Alhassan Koroma (Baniyas – UAE) and Daniel Kanu (Notts County).
